History

Before explorer Jacques Cartier first came to what is today considered as Montreal, nomadic First Nations lived on the land and fended for themselves. Montreal became the capital of Canada in 1844, but it only lasted for 5 years. Montreal was deeply touched by the World Wars as great immigration flows started and the City became more and more multicultural. Through Great Depressions and economical crisis, Montreal grew and became the great City it is today, with a liberal government at its head and democracy as its motto.
